BUCS regatta 2025

Over early May bank holiday weekend (3rd-5th May), MUBC headed back to Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham for BUCS Regatta!!

Here is the rundown from our captains:

Senior Men

The Senior Men’s 8+ were first to race, hitting the water with the excitement of being able to execute what they had been putting into practice since head season came to a close. The time trial didn’t go our way but we were determined to show others what we knew we were capable of. After a slow start in our final, Jessie kept us informed on where we stood in the field, letting us stay internal and keep moving on the crews next to us. After a huge push inside the last 250 we were happy to come back to claim 3rd over such a small margin.

Sunday presented the 4+’s with the challenge of conditions, a defiant cross headwind ensured that the time trial would be no walk in the park. The A boat were content with getting into the E final given the small time spent in that crew. The B boat struggled with the conditions unfortunately failing to qualify for a final. Lots of lessons learned and the men are looking forward to the rest of what the summer racing season has to offer.

Senior Women

The senior women had a very exciting BUCS regatta with crews racing on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. On Saturday the 4x gave it their all in the Time Trial, despite unfortunately not qualifying for a final, they came off the water satisfied that they had given it their best shot.

Sunday was the 1st 8+ race. After executing our race plan well we managed to secure an F-final. As the first race of the regatta season for everyone, this was about getting out and enjoying side-by-side racing. The whole 8 absolutely sent it down the course, fighting to the line.

On Monday, the SW had 2 4+s competing. Despite the 2nd 4s best efforts, they didn’t make a final. However, the 1st 4+ made the D-final, even without much training in the crew. It was a tough race lining up against the likes of Liverpool and Southampton, but we were very proud to have made that final and it has added more fuel to the fire for next year.

Novice Men

Saturday saw our two 4+’s each reach a final. It was their first ever side by side racing experience and they both powered through to the finish line, not being thrown off by the other crews and implementing all that we had built over camp.

Sunday was our main event, and the boys did not disappoint. The A boat achieved a C final, the highest of any Manchester squad over the weekend, and the B boat achieved D final. Two performances to be proud of. The boys clearly felt the adrenaline of the finals, being the last time that they would compete together as a crew. In typically Manchester fashion, we were lagging behind off the start, but also in typical Manchester fashion, we powered past other crews during the race. The Nov Men clearly demonstrated how much they have improved over the past months and have achieved a proud ending to their novice year.

Novice Women

Sunday saw the 2 Novice Women’s 4+’s race – their first regatta race to date. Both of the crews qualified for the F final in which they came 1st and 3rd (very close from 2nd place – neck and neck until the end). This left the two crews hungry for more and excited for a day racing in the 8+.

After a strong performance in the time trial, the crew qualified for a D final in which they were neck and neck with Loughborough to the finish. Unfortunately they just missed out on the 1st place but an exceptional race nonetheless.

A very strong end to a great first year of racing for these girls who have made incredible progress throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming them into the senior squad and seeing what the future holds for them!
