On the 22nd and 23rd of February, the squads were meant to be headed up to Newcastle for a weekend of racing at BUCS 4s and 8s head with the seniors competing on the Saturday and novices on the Sunday. However, due to forecasted winds of up to 50mph on Sunday (not to mention the torrential amount of rain), all racing on the second day was cancelled. This unfortunately did mean that novice 4’s were unable to compete, but novice 8’s were still able to compete alongside the seniors on the Saturday with all boats rowing the full 5km course.
The first division saw the senior women’s 8’s followed by the senior mens 4 and the novice women’s 8. The senior women’s crews both performed brilliantly in the W int8+ category, as did the novices (in the W beg8+ category) but unfortunately due to damage to the boat during boating the 4+ were unable to race.
Later, in the second division we got to watch the senior men’s 8 (making use of their new Hudson in the O Int8+!!), and (last but certainly not least) the novice men’s 8’s in the O Beg8+ race. The senior men did really well given the afternoons conditions, and so did both the novice men’s 8’s showing a definite improvement since novice race day which was great to see.
Although the weekend didn’t go exactly as planned and the conditions were less than ideal, the squads still had a great time, enjoying the chance to go up against all the other university squads as well as the opportunity for club bonding in the form of a carb load at toby carvery the night before.
Following a great day of racing in Newcastle, we are looking forward to a very busy last couple of months of head season, with Runcorn Spring Head, WEHORR, North of England Head and HORR just around the corner!!
